Event information

Ave Maria is an intense and rarefied theatrical experience, where the boundary between ritual, memory, and poetry dissolves into an essential and deeply evocative stage form.

The performance is by Eugenio Barba, one of the greatest masters of international contemporary theater, founder of Odin Teatret and a central figure of the European avant-garde of the late twentieth century. With over sixty years of research, awards, and recognition worldwide, Barba has revolutionized the language of the stage through anthropological theater, influencing generations of artists and scholars.

On stage, Odin's longtime actress, Julia Varley, brings to life a theatrical ceremony suspended between life and death: an intimate journey that evokes the figure of Chilean actress María Cánepa, transforming memory into living presence.

Death becomes the narrator, celebrating the creativity, dedication, and trace left by those who are no longer with us, in a continuous dialogue between absence and memory.

"Ave Maria" takes the form of a true theatrical ritual, where gesture, sound, and silence create an immersive and universal experience. A theater that does not narrate, but evokes; that does not represent, but transforms, inviting the spectator to listen deeply and reflect on time, art, and the permanence of human traces.

An event of great artistic and cultural value, which brings to the stage one of the most authoritative voices in world theater, in a show capable of spanning eras, cultures, and sensibilities.

Teatro Sociale di Amelia

The Amerino Theater is one of the rare surviving examples of an 18th-century theater built entirely of wood, from the structures to the stage mechanisms still in perfect working order. For this reason, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage has declared it a monument of particular historical and artistic interest.

The Teatro Sociale, until 2020, was owned by the same Theater Society from which it takes its name, founded for its construction. Today, it is owned by the State, which granted it in 2023 to the Cultural Association "Ameria1782 il Teatro delle Art." The theater has hosted all the major works of the Italian and European lyric repertoire, with the participation of great opera singers, as well as symphonic and chamber music performances.

Also worth mentioning is the frequent use of the large stage for filming: it has been calculated that 42 films and television series have been shot here, some of which are very well known to the Italian public, such as The Adventures of Pinocchio by Luigi Comencini with Nino Manfredi (1972) and The Marchese del Grillo by Mario Monicelli with Alberto Sordi (1981).
