Luigi Boccherini's Stabat Mater is on the program. It is a medieval Sequence whose authorship is uncertain - but it is common practice to attribute it to Jacopone da Todi - which recalls Mary's pain at the foot of the cross.
Written for individual prayer (the text is presented in the first person singular), the Sequence then passed to the Missal and Breviary for the office of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, thus effectively entering the liturgical repertoire.
What has characterized Boccherini's Stabat Mater since the 1781 version is the vocal distribution with two sopranos and a tenor, leaving the string quintet part unchanged.
