The medieval garden is located within the walls of St. Peter's Basilica and stands in the place where there was the fishpond of the Benedictine monks. Its historical point of reference is the Hortus conclusus, a garden surrounded by walls where plants useful for monastic life were grown. In 1896 it was transformed into the fourth botanical garden of the University and in 1996, following the project of Alessandro Menghini, it was transformed into a medieval garden. The plan of the structure and the placement of some plants were created on the basis of religious and cultural criteria, according to the medieval symbolist conception.
