Cultivated fields, woods, transhumance trails, waterways, but also lands devastated by wars and earthquakes. During the modern era, Italy consisted mostly of areas located outside urban centers. These areas became the focus of growing interest for state authorities, who sought to manage environmental resources. At the same time, plants from overseas, brought by the global expansion of trade, reshaped the agricultural landscape, where, at the same time, the civilization of villas and gardens was flourishing. Political and economic dynamics shaped the material elements of the Italian countryside, while artists, writers, cartographers, and travelers shaped the landscape and its aesthetic meanings, which became an integral part of Italy's cultural identity. Beginning with the late Middle Ages and extending to the Napoleonic era, the book reconstructs the many and intertwined events that shaped Italy's "beautiful landscape," preserving its characteristics to the present day.

Villa del Colle del Cardinale - Perugia
The Villa del Cardinale is the best known of the Umbrian residential complexes, built in the mid-sixteenth century. The detailed restoration work on the monumental and naturalistic complex, conducted by the Superintendence for Architectural Heritage and Landscape of Umbria and currently implemented by the Umbria Museum Complex, will soon allow the complete recovery of the property as a prestigious period residence, but also a museum place for events and temporary exhibitions extended to the garden and park. The naturalistic complex, spread over 13 hectares, of extraordinary landscape charm and undisputed monumental value, is still of great scientific interest today due to the variety and richness of the botanical species.
