L’elisir d’amore is a melodrama giocoso in two acts, first performed on May 12, 1832 at the Teatro della Cannobiana in Milan. The story revolves around the naive farmer Nemorino, in love with the wealthy Adina but unable to declare his love. The arrival of the charlatan Dulcamara –who pretends to be a doctor and sells him a phantom elixir of love – sets in motion a series of misunderstandings and comical situations, amidst illusions, jealousies and misunderstandings. Among the most beloved works of the nineteenth-century repertoire, L’elisir d’amore combines theatrical lightness and extraordinary melodic inspiration, culminating in some of the most famous pages of Italian opera.

The Morlacchi Theatre, the largest in the city, is located in the historic center of Perugia in Piazza Morlacchi, adjacent to the University of Letters and Philosophy. It was inaugurated in 1781 taking the name of "Teatro Civico del Verzaro" and with a capacity of 1200 spectators at the time. Today, between an audience, five tiers of boxes and the horseshoe shape typical of Italian theatres, it has a total capacity of 785 seats.
