The Clouds is a comedy by Aristophanes, first performed in Athens, at the Great Dionysia in 423 BC.
The farmer Strepsiades is persecuted by creditors because of the money that his son Phidippides has squandered on horse racing; he then thinks of sending his son to the school of Socrates, a philosopher who, clinging to every sophism, teaches how to prevail in dialectical clashes, even when in a position of obvious wrong. In this way, Strepsiades thinks, his son will be able to win any lawsuit that the creditors bring against him.
