We live in crazy and terrible times: years of war, of identity delusions, of hatred and phobias.

What better time for a love letter?

And not just any love letter: a letter to Giacomo Leopardi, the poet who, more than any other, recounted the torments of his present and the difficulty of finding one's place in the world, simultaneously opening spaces of superhuman silence and profound stillness where he could bring his readers to safety, at least for a moment. Met during difficult formative years, Leopardi became a lifelong traveling companion for Antonio Moresco, and he can be one for us in the same way: a friend who never betrays us, who never abandons us, who knows how to make us dream but also strike us with the truth.

Moresco thus composes the most vivid, lyrical, and universal of all books on Leopardi: he recounts a youth plagued by doubts and illuminated by illusions; he explores his thoughts and works, reflecting on what literature is—and should not be; he rediscovers, with him, love and rebellion, freedom and death; he explores the threat of evil and the temptation of happiness. Finally, he soars with him, high above the miseries of the world, to describe our present as Leopardi would have seen and interpreted it, and to give us a new perspective on the times we live in: that of the swallows, that of the poets.
