Event information
*Eugenio Montale: Between Music and Melancholy* is a lecture-recital focusing on the profound passion for the art of sound held by Italy’s greatest 20th-century poet. The speaker, Paolo Repetto, will read some of Montale’s most significant poems—works in which musical themes emerge through the lens of memory and melancholy. Interspersed with these readings—which will include commentary and thematic insights—Repetto will perform piano pieces by composers particularly beloved by Montale, such as Debussy and Chopin.
Paolo Repetto holds a degree with honors in Modern Literature (specializing in Art History) from the University of Genoa. He pursued his musical studies at the "G. Verdi" Conservatory in Turin, where he earned a diploma in piano performance.
Throughout his career as a historian and critic, he has explored the relationships and correspondences between art and music. He has published numerous essays and the following books: *Il silenzio dei suoni: Scritti sulla musica* (University of Genoa, 1993); *Il sogno di Pan: Saggio su Debussy* (il melangolo, 2000); *L’orizzonte dell’eternità: La musica romantica* (il melangolo, 2003); *La visione dei suoni: Arte-Musica* (il melangolo, 2008); *Il canto della luce: Scritti sull’arte* (il melangolo, 2021); and *L’anima dei colori: I padri dell’arte del ‘900* (il melangolo, 2025). His forthcoming book is titled *I pittori romantici: Il visibile dell’invisibile* (Abscondita/Mondadori, 2026). For several years, he has collaborated with Repetto Gallery—formerly based in London and now in Lugano (Switzerland)—and De Primi Fine Art (Lugano), gaining deep insight into the vast contemporary art market. He has produced numerous programs for Rete 2 (the cultural channel of Radio Svizzera Italiana) and contributed to the Turin-based newspaper *La Stampa*, reviewing books for its *Specchio* supplement. He has published widely in *FMR* magazine; served as a music critic for the monthly *Amadeus*; and currently works as an art critic for *Corriere del Ticino*.
He is a visiting professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has taught "Analysis of the Entertainment Market" at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan and "Comparative Music: Art and Music" at the Conservatory of Italian Switzerland (CSI). He currently conducts courses and seminars for the "Made in Italy" Master’s program at IULM University in Milan. He is a member of the artistic committee for the cultural association "Fiori di Pesco. AgricUltura in mostra. Letteratura Arte Musica" in Volpedo (Alessandria).
He curates art exhibitions and concerts.
