Event information
"Enoch Arden" by Richard Strauss is a composition for singing voice and piano, written in 1897.
The work is based on the narrative poem of the same name by Alfred Tennyson, translated into German by Adolf Strodtmann. The text tells a poignant story of love, sacrifice and loss: Enoch Arden, a sailor, shipwrecked on a deserted island and returns home after many years, only to discover that his wife, believing him dead, has remarried. He then renounces his love and chooses not to reveal his identity. Strauss accompanies the text with a discreet and deeply expressive music, which emphasizes the emotions and salient moments of the story, without ever overpowering the word. It is an intimate and touching work, which combines drama and music in a fascinating form.
