Event information

Another great author arrives at the Umbria Green Festival Literary Café: Tiziano Fratus.

Sunday, April 19th, at 6:00 PM.

Free admission. Reservations required.

"If for Leopardi it was the indifferent force of the elements that threatened humanity, today it is humanity that threatens the balance of the world. Boitani, Fratus, Gallo, Uliana, the essayist Iovino: many authors question, in dialogue with tradition, the crisis [...] An embroidered forest by Tiziano Fratus (Mimesis): the book transforms the loss of a father and the impossibility of understanding both parents into the embrace of a forest, felt as generative and salvific, to the point of making the author speak of a vegetal providence" (Daniele Piccini, La Lettura)

"Between bark and paper, the map of the Buddhist rural poet expands; the destiny of humanity is traced, between water, earth, and air, in a rapid succession of verses that produces pleasant vertigo" (Luca Mastrantonio, (7 Corriere della Sera)

Tiziano Fratus—Homo Radix, tree-drawer, seeker of ancient trees, author of illuminated forests, and a woodland Buddhist—rereads his poems and inventions most intimately connected to nature, and takes stock, at fifty, of what remains after the passing of his father and the echoes of a grandmother now unreachable. "The Buddhist Sparrow" and "An Embroidered Forest" will be the books we will discuss with the author, as we strive to remain human, fallible and contradictory, yet capable of seeking good in a world that falters.

The Buddhist Sparrow

With the care of a wise and discreet forest guide, Fratus leads us along paths we recognize but that time has sometimes made us forget. He gently invites us to look around us to find in nature a source of essential truths, thus rediscovering the most ancient form of meditation. The sparrow, an emblem of simple humility, becomes a companion and model for navigating the complexity of a planet wounded by war, brutality, and oppression. It is a call to practice Buddhism without the anxiety of perfection, with the will to remain human, fallible, and contradictory, yet capable of seeking good in a world in turmoil. In this new display of lyricism and compassion, Fratus reveals himself as a guardian of the inner forests, offering an intimate collection of natural meditations on the meaning of life, spiritual exploration, and our fragile condition, intertwining personal experiences and reflections that range from pine trees to waterfalls, from literature to music, from poetry to politics.

An Embroidered Forest

An Embroidered Forest is almost a family album, composed of minimal acts of meditation in the form of ink marks. Real forests and memorial forests, written forests and silent forests. An Embroidered Forest embraces Teatro Bosco Fosco, a song of love and reverie to nature, a work to be relived, if possible, in a forest; Poems of the non-mother, a prayer to and of the loneliness of what was, in her own way, the poor, fragile, natural mother; Inventing a Father is a scream, a crash, a pain scratched onto the pages, blossoming during and after the father's passing; Confession to the Tree and Concert at the Beginning of the World are ultimately hypotheses, perhaps intuitions, epiphanies.
