Piazza Giacomo Matteotti is the central square of Città dii Catello, originally also called "di Sopra", in the opposite way to Piazza Venanzio Gabriotti, called "di Sotto". Built in the 16th century in connection with the construction of the Palazzo Vitelli in Piazza, begun in the 15th century by the sons of Niccolò Vitelli and finished in 1545 by Alessandro Vitelli. The latter, in fact, had the Municipality purchase all the houses facing the façade and had them demolished, thus giving maximum value to the building and giving it an important political significance.
