Probably a Roman settlement, as can be deduced from its rectangular shape, Castel Ritaldi was one of the main fortified places in Normandy, the “small province” in the lands of the church that enjoyed some autonomy in the 12th-13th centuries. Until 1816, without the territories of Castel S. Giovanni and Colle del Marchese, the small municipality maintained its independence from Spoleto, overcoming unscathed, between 1868 and 1875, the law of the Kingdom of Italy that wanted municipalities with less than 1500 inhabitants to be suppressed (it had 923).
