Torri di Properzio - Spello (PG)

Torri di Properzio - Spello (PG)

The Towers of Propertius rise as a precious ornament of the ancient Porta Venere. The gate directly connected the upper city to the extra-urban monumental complex consisting of the theatre, amphitheater and sanctuary. It can be dated to the Augustan age, contemporary with the city walls onto which it was welded directly.

The gate is flanked by two tall twelve-sided towers made of blocks of local limestone, pink and white, believed to be from the medieval era. An ancient tradition linked the name of these towers to the poet Propertius (Spello is one of the cities that boasts the poet's birthplace) and another legend has it that the tower upstream was the prison of the paladin Orlando.

Climbing the spiral stairs inside, you can enjoy the view of a beautiful landscape from the panoramic terrace.
