Event information

Umbria Green Festival celebrates its tenth anniversary by presenting, as a national premiere, a monologue by Paolo Nori on one of the most famous novels in world literature: Crime and Punishment. The monologue will also have the opportunity to show the places of the novel (Raskol’nikov’s house, the loan shark’s house, the courtyard in which Raskol’nikov hides the stolen goods, etc…).

Music: from Boris Godunov by Mussorgskil

“Crime and Punishment is perhaps Dostoevsky’s most popular novel, the novel with which he regains fame after being sentenced to death and exile; it is during the writing of Crime and Punishment that Dostoevsky meets his future wife, Anna Grigor’evna; Crime and Punishment is perhaps also the first novel by Dostoevsky in which the most interesting characters are the negative ones, a murderer, Rodion Raskolnikov, a molester, Arkady Svidrigailov, a prostitute, Sonya Marmeladova; it is also, as interesting as it may be, the first novel I read, I was fifteen, and, while I was reading it, I had the impression that that novel, published 118 years earlier, three thousand kilometers away from where I was, had opened a wound inside me that would not stop bleeding any time soon. Then, Crime and Punishment is a novel that, in a certain sense, even those who have not read it have read. If you have seen an episode of Columbo, the TV series, you have also read a little of Crime and Punishment.” Paolo Nori

Paolo Nori (Parma, 1963), graduated in Russian literature, has published novels and essays, including “Bassotuba non c’è” (1999), “Si chiama Francesca”, “Questo romanzo” (2002), “Noi la farem vendetta” (2006), “I malcontenti” (2010), “I russi sono matti” (2019), “Che dolore” (What a shame) (2020) and “Angelina ancora” (2021), “Vi avvito che vi vivo per l’ultima volta” (2023), “Chiudo la porta e urlo” (2024). He has translated and edited works by, among others, Pushkin, Gogol’, Lermontov, Turgenev, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Dostoevsky, Bulgakov, Khlebnikov, Charms.
