Event information
First performed in 1689 at a London girls' boarding school, Dido and Aeneas is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of English opera. The libretto, inspired by the Fourth Canto of Virgil's Aeneid, tells the tragic story of the queen of Carthage abandoned by the Trojan hero: a theme that still retains a strong relevance today. Since the original manuscript has survived without some musical parts, the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale commissioned the missing segments of the work from a contemporary composer, Riccardo Panfili from Terni, precisely to underline, through the temporal contrast, the perennial contemporaneity of the subject.
