Piazza Pianciani - Spoleto

Piazza Pianciani - Spoleto

Piazza Pianciani - Spoleto

The square was opened in the eighteenth century for the building works to transform the area, owned by the Pianciani family, who demolished old houses and built a palace of great proportions, magnificently decorated in the interior parts. The double-armed staircase that embellishes the square, built in the early twentieth century, leads to one of the most evocative streets of Spoleto, via Fontesecca, where medieval and Renaissance buildings overlook: an example is the overpass of Palazzo Leoncilli, with balconies and loggias. At the top of the street you continue to the Duomo (on the left) or to Piazza del Mercato (on the right). From Piazza Pianciani you can also access the underground moving walkways (mechanized route no. 3), which lead to Piazza Campello, a recommended exit to easily reach the Rocca Albornoz and the Ponte delle Torri and continue your visit of the city downhill.
