Event information

There are two young fish swimming next to each other and they meet an older fish who, swimming in the opposite direction, waves to them and then says, “Good morning, boys. How’s the water?” The two young fish continue swimming for a while, and then one of them looks at the other and asks, “What the hell is water?” This fable told by David Foster Wallace on the occasion of the graduation ceremony at Kenyon College has always been an important point of reference for Umbria Green Festival, because often the most obvious and important realities are the most difficult to see and talk about. And this thought is certainly a cliché, but as Wallace himself says, “in the daily trenches in which existence unfolds, banal clichés can be matters of life and death.”

Loredana Lipperini, Simone Tempia and Giuseppe Zucco will tell us about water from a literary point of view in a dystopian journey - water that rises to the sky and never comes back down, as happens in Zucco's novel - and imaginative, through the words of Simone Tempia, who will tell us about a real atlas of water that investigates rivers and water basins and tells their story.

Communities have always been organized and structured around water. The State Archives of Perugia, custodian of a vast documentary heritage that goes from the 10th century to the present day, includes, among the written and iconographic archival sources, testimonies regarding the management of water over the centuries, its impact on the conformation of the landscape and the consequences on economic and productive activities. As an exception, a selection of the most representative documents will be exhibited on the occasion of this Umbria Green Festival event.

SALA BIBLIOTECA ARCHIVIO DI STATO - Perugia

The library of the State Archives of Perugia is located in the ancient Dominican convent, dating back to the 13th century.

The bibliographic heritage, rich in editions of documentary sources, publications on archival, paleographic, historical, legal-institutional and local interest topics, preserves approximately 35,000 volumes, including two notable ancient funds: the Libraria della famiglia Fiumi Sermattei della Genga and that of the Perugian scholar Giuseppe Belforti.

Among the material present, we note: 2 incunabula, 762 16th century editions, approximately 600 17th century editions, 500 periodical titles, of which only about ten are current.

In addition to the Institute library, the book material is also located in the libraries of the Sections of Assisi, Foligno, Gubbio and Spoleto.
